Basic news modules does not take into account featured setting/filtering.

You have to add (on core/helper.php) at line 55 the following in order to work properly:
// Featured
$model->setState('filter.featured', $params->get('show_front', 'show'));

Please change it on templates too (quickstart packages), because that was included on verity_mag template.
