Two problems, first I cannot add new categories and second problem is thumbnails for new products are not displaying

One other thing I noticed, there is an update available for the Virtuemart module, but no matter how I try to install it I just get a blank page

I tried the autoupdate and also manually downloading the latest version from virtuemart.net and both ways give a blank page
